Trekking in the Maritime Alps.
A week’s trekking in the Maritime Alps consists of 5 full days guided trekking, mid-week is a free day with the opportunity to visit the beach, San Remo/Monaco or other excursion.
This is secret Italy; only 10km from the border with France as the crow flies, yet staunchly Italian in identity. Enchanting hilltop villages, where it’s not uncommon to be invited to share a glass of excellent homemade wine and given some delicious aperitivos. You'll be unlucky not to see camosci (chamois) in the high mountains, plus golden eagles, hoopoes and lots of other rare birds. The scent of wild herbs is ever present, in particular thyme and lavender, and a plethora of wild flowers including the rare edelweiss, saffron crocus, gentian, to name a few.
Monte Saccarello is Liguria’s highest peak at 2200m and offers spectacular views down to the coast, and sometimes the island of Corsica in the Mediterranean, and looking north it’s possible to see Mont Blanc or Monte Bianco in Italian. A trek here is accessible by any level of fitness as its possible to use an uplift to within an hour’s walk.
The landscape in this region is varied and includes, open grass and rock, large expanses of deciduous forest (the largest in Italy) and pine woods. On the lower slopes, up to altitudes of 750m are olive groves, home to the famous Taggiasche Olive renowned for its high yield of oil. Interspersed with all these are small vineyards and “orto’s” where the locals grow their vegetables.
All groups are catered for, but you must be prepared for mountain walking with wet weather gear and appropriate footwear.
The price of the week’s trekking includes airport transfers and uplifts if necessary to commence the walks etc.
DAY EXCURSIONS.
If you are a visitor to the area or non-cycling partner it’s possible to book a day’s excursion trekking. Mountain bikers seeking respite from the excitement on the trails can also join the trekkers.
